Obtaining A Miner’s Right

A Miner's Right

A Miner’s Right

Before you can prospect or fossick in Victoria, you must purchase a Victorian “Miner’s Right”.

A Miner’s Right allows the holder to search for, and take possession of, any mineral located on many areas of public land, or, on private land with the landholder’s prior consent. Only basic non-powered hand tools (i.e. pick, shovel, sieve, etc.,) can be used.

Victorian Miner’s Rights can be purchased at any office of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) or Dept of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), also at selected tourist information centres, some prospecting equipment supply shops or online at http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/visit/popular-activities/fossicking

A “Miners Right” costs $23.70 (10 years). All Adults (18 and over) on a field trip must have a current one. No exceptions, no concessions.
